All 16 Beethoven String Quartets will be performed during the first two weeks of the 2016 Sitka Summer Music Festival. The Cypress String Quartet has been gearing up for this musical treat as a part of their farewell tour.

According to a press release from the Quartet,

“For the past several seasons, the Cypress String Quartet (CSQ) has immersed itself in performing Beethoven on tours throughout the United States and Europe as well as recording all 16 works plus the “Grande Fugue” (Große Fuge). On May 6, AVIE Records will release the group’s recording of Beethoven’s Early Quartets. The album was recorded at Skywalker Sound by Mark Willsher and produced by Cecily Ward. The CSQ completes its cycle of the genre’s greatest oeuvre with this 2-CD set of Beethoven’s six groundbreaking quartets, Op. 18, alongside a reissue of its 2012 self-released recording of Beethoven’s Late Quartets. The completion of the Beethoven cycle recording is a fitting celebration of the ensemble’s 20th anniversary as well as the group’s valedictory season.

In 20 years on the concert stage, the Cypress String Quartet has played thousands of concerts throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Lauded by The New York Times for its “tender, deeply expressive” interpretations, the group has recorded over 15 albums which are played regularly on hundreds of radio stations throughout the world. The quartet has also been heard on the Netflix original series “House of Cards” and has collaborated with leading artists ranging from Michael Franti of Spearhead to modern dance companies.

In addition to definitive interpretations of masters such as Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert, the CSQ has commissioned some of the most important composers of our time including Kevin Puts, Philippe Hersant, Jennifer Higdon, George Tsontakis, and Elena Ruehr. Upon reviewing the world premiere of composer George Tsontakis’ String Quartet No. 5, the San Francisco Chronicle said the quartet ‘brought a combination of tenderness and urgency to the music, expertly rendering the piece’s delicate weave.'”

We are delighted and honored to have the Cypress String Quartet returning to the Sitka Summer Music Festival during their final year together. Don’t miss this spectacular musical accomplishment.  Join us for one quartet or for all 16!
