The Matt Herskowitz Trio will return to Alaska in September to perform at the 2017 Autumn Classics in Anchorage. On September 15th, the trio will perform “Suite for Cello and Jazz Trio,” written by French jazz legend Claude Bolling, alongside SSMF Artistic Director and cellist Zuill Bailey, as well as a piece by Bach/Soloff, and original works by Matt Herskowitz and drummer David Rozenblatt. The following evening, they will present “Chopin Reimagined,” a program featuring the music of Chopin with a jazz twist. Both concerts will be presented in the UAA Recital Hall at 7:30pm.

Pianist, composer and arranger Matt Herskowitz has carved out a unique and personal voice in music, uniquely combining the superlative technique of a classical virtuoso with his prowess in jazz, world music and free improvisation. Over the course of the last decade, Matt has produced a series of critically-acclaimed recordings, premiered his works in settings from New York’s Central Park to Germany’s Köln Philharmonie, collaborated with top classical, jazz and pop artists, and has performed at music festivals across the globe.

Mat Fieldes (bass) is an active freelance musician in New York City. A versatile artist, Fields has collaborated with artists across a wide range of genres, including classical, jazz, rock, hip-hop, R&B, and Broadway. Notable stars he collaborated with include Ornette Coleman, Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Barry Manilow, hip-hop legend Jay-Z, and hip-hop virtual band the Gorillaz. Additionally, Fieldes performed on Joe Jackson’s album, Symphony, which won a Grammy Award for “Best Pop Instrumental.”

Much like Herskowitz and Fieldes, drummer David Rozenblatt has also performed with some of the finest musical talent today, including Stevie Wonder, Lady Gaga, Michael Buble, Cindy Lauper, Tony Bennet and Donna Summer, to name a few. Presently, Rozenblatt plays with Barry Manilow’s band, performing for sold out arenas across the globe, and recording Grammy-nominated, chart-topping, and Emmy-winning albums and DVDs. Also a composer, Rozenblatt has written the music for five original ballets,  including Three Point Turn, which was premiered at the New York City Center, The Orange County Performing Arts Center, and the Stanislavsky Musical Theater in Moscow.

The trio recently received a Grammy nomination for Barry Manilow’s Gold album, In The Swing of Christmas. The trio’s albums, Forget Me Not and Jerusalem Trilogy were nominated for Felix and Juno Awards for “Best Contemporary Jazz Album(s) of the Year.”
